Joy in Every Hue: Shaping a Vibrant Design System
Casa Moderna
Event Branding • Off-Screen • Print • Digital
Casa Moderna Expo is Mexico City’s newest annual home improvement event, celebrating design trends, innovative products and a DIY spirit. Hosted at the Mexico City Convention Centre, this three-day event inspires homeowners to embrace creativity and transform their spaces. As a new expo, Casa Moderna needed a bold identity to stand out and resonate with a diverse audience.
To find visual inspiration, I researched Mexico City and learned about the prominent architect, Luis Barragán. His masterful use of bold colours and architectural forms were eye-catching and visually distinctive, making a strong source of inspiration. This led me to ideate the concept Form Meets Colour which emphasises the harmonious relationship between structure and palette, where shapes and hues work together to create a distinct visual narrative.
As the expo’s theme is “Do It Yourself”, I took an off-screen approach and created three of Barragan’s houses by hand using paper. These houses then acted as a motif for the rest of my design system. Image treatment, colour palette and typography choice were all inspired by their forms and colours, including the creation of a bespoke DIY type lock up. The outcome was a design that excites potential attendees and encourages them to get creative with their home improvement projects.
